Inspired by Abbey England’s latest ‘podcraft’ Saddlers’ Company explores how you, as a customer or producer of leather goods, can act to safeguard and strengthen our trades.
Like many sectors, saddlery and leather goods production has faced significant challenges in 2023. Rising costs, changes in demand, and global competition have put pressure on craftspeople and manufacturers alike.
Facing the challenges, together.
Granted a Royal Charter in 1395, the Worshipful Company of Saddlers still proudly fulfils its duty to our industry by funding bursaries, a training facility in Walsall, research initiatives, and saddlery-fit education for riders in all disciplines.
We firmly believe in the enduring value and immense potential of British leathercraft. Looking ahead, our focus is on skills training and entrepreneurship and working within collaborative partnerships to ensure that saddlery and allied sectors have the tools they need to remain resilient, prosperous, and sustainable.
Saddlery and leather businesses are adapting and diversifying in order to thrive, but their dedication to the tradition of skilled leatherwork in the UK is one half of the coin: we, as stakeholders in the wider craft community, have a vital role to play in ensuring the future of this rich heritage.
Here’s how we can all contribute:
Appreciate the value. Choose British-made saddlery and leather goods. When you invest in a saddle, bridle, bag, or jacket you recognise and support high standards of of design, production, and craft.
Understand the material. Leather is a beautiful, versatile, durable, and sustainable material. Explore its qualities through resources such as LeatherUK and LeatherNaturally
Engage a professional. If you have or work with horses, employ a qualified saddle or bridle fitter. Their expertise ensures both horse and equestrian are comfortable and confident, whilst supporting British-made saddlery.
Excite the next generation. Share your knowledge and passion with people new to the craft, inspiring them to embrace a fulfilling career in leathercraft.
Support the trade: Choose UK-based suppliers and retailers who uphold the highest standards. By supporting this ecosystem, we can ensure the industry’s continued strength and prosperity.
The future of British leathercraft isn’t just about products; it’s about protecting our legacy, nurturing our community; and celebrating the spirit of determination and entrepreneurship. We hope you will join us to ensure that future generations can celebrate British saddlery and leathergoods.
