SEG – Level 1 Award – Introduction to Leather
A working group of experts from across the leather sectors, in collaboration with the Saddlers’ Company, has developed a Level 1 award designed to provide an entry point into a career working with leather.
The three units are approved by the Skills and Education Group for inclusion in their Level 1 Fashion & Textiles Award and can be taken together to earn the full award or combined with units covering other specialist textile skills.
Importantly, the Skills and Education Group L1 Award is eligible for government funding of 14-16yrs, 16-19yrs and adult education, making it an accessible and affordable option for aspiring leatherworkers. No prior experience is needed for this short 120-hour course.
What you will learn
The course is hands-on and focuses on teaching a foundation of practical skills such as cutting, finishing, stitching, and incorporating fixtures and fittings, but you will also explore the versatility and sustainability of leather, and opportunities for next steps into careers or further learning.
This award will give you a sound start, whether you are considering a career in manufacturing or bespoke making items such as bags and cases, upholstery, garments, saddlery, shoes, or book binding.
If you are interested in learning how to work with leather, or you are a training provider who would like to offer this course, please complete this short form and we will be back in touch with more information:
