Walsall Leather Skills Centre increases offering
The Saddlers’ Company Charitable Fund set up the Walsall Leather Skills Centre in 2020 to address a shortfall in those gaining the necessary skills in saddlery and leather required to sustain the craft and industry in the UK. Today, the training is delivered by a Community Interest Company that is still backed by the Charity and the Horlock Education Trust.
This now thriving Centre teaches courses from the complete beginner to the advanced practitioner whilst supporting the delivery of the Leather Craftsperson (Level 2) and Bespoke Saddler (Level 3) Trailblazer Apprenticeships.
For those who wish to become a Qualified Saddler the WLSC supports the achievement of the City & Guilds Level 2 & Level 3 Diploma in Saddlery (Bridle, Saddle and Harness).
There is also plenty on offer for those who wish to develop their craft leatherworking skills – whether for pleasure or as businesses producing niche and luxury leather goods. Many courses are part time or at weekends giving lots of flexibility around how you learn.
Bursaries and support with tools and equipment are available to those that qualify.
